Letter from NCLD (LD News: February 2007)

Dear Supporters and Constituents,

NCLD is committed to bringing the nation's leading learning disabilities experts to parents and educators. One of our chief communication channels is LD Talk, the only service that features online, live discussions on issues that are critically important to individuals with learning disabilities. Each month of the school year, NCLD hosts an LD Talk on a variety of topics including, in recent discussions, Recognition & Response, LD & the Juvenile Justice System, and Making the Leap to College.

This month, we are delighted to welcome David Rose, a distinguished member of the NCLD Professional Advisory Board to LD Talk. Dr. Rose, who helped to found the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST), specializes in developmental neuropsychology and in universal design for learning and has been on the faculty at the Harvard Graduate School of Education for 20 years. He has also been the lead researcher on several U.S. Department of Education grants and is currently the principal investigator of two national centers created to develop and implement the National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS).

The Talk, to be held Tuesday, February 20 at 2:00 p.m. ET, will focus on Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Effective Technology-based Teaching Practices for All Struggling Learners. UDL provides a blueprint for creating flexible goals, methods, materials, and assessments that accommodate learner differences. Universal Design has extraordinary implications and benefits for all students, especially those with language-based learning disabilities.

We encourage our readers to submit questions in advance, participate in the live online LD Talk, and view and share transcripts of the discussion in order to ensure that this valuable information reaches and provides assistance to as many parents, educators, and children as possible.
