Public School 149, The Christa McAuliffe School Jackson Heights, N.Y. Pete & Carrie Rozelle Award Winner (2007) The 2007 Pete & Carrie Rozelle Award winner is Public School 149, The Christa McAuliffe School, located in Jackson Heights, N.Y. Serving 1,050 children in kindergarten through grade five, this school has lived up to its mission: "To educate each child as if he/she were our own." With more than 80 percent of the student body eligible for free or reduced lunch, and more than half of the students designated as English Language Learners, P.S. 149 faces special challenges to ensure that every child has ready access to the general curriculum and that teachers, parents and support personnel work closely to foster a love of learning and a climate of high expectations for achievement. The proof is in the data: this school met its annual yearly progress (AYP) goals in elementary-level English language arts, mathematics and science for the 2005-2006 school year, and by all indications, this year's results will be even better!
Marlene Gonzalez, Principal of P.S.149, refers to the school as a "happening place," a destination for young children, teens and adults, from early morning to late in the evening, a second home where members of the community can join together in play and in learning. NCLD is proud to recognize the remarkable accomplishments of this school.
